Instead of ammo, these powers use elemental charges called SP; but, like ammo, you can only carry so many points of charge for each power at a time. There’s limited opportunity to expand your spiritual pockets, which is where Jizo statues come in. Praying to any Jizo statue you find as you explore the streets of Tokyo will expand your capacity for one type of elemental charge by a whopping one point, depending on the colour of the statue: red for fire, blue for water, and green for air....

Yet it’s also not without its flaws, both in how it designs around the limitations of current VR tech, and in the more mundane challenges of crafting single player adventures. We’ve had our shot at Halo 2 before, back in 2004. But being a Vista exclusive and Games For Windows Live test subject, it didn’t get much of a fair rap. Arriving on Steam and the Windows Store sometime this year, Bungie’s Two Towers gets a second shot with its own Anniversary remastering sometime this year. Like the first game, Halo 2’s been given an audiovisual touch-up. But while I’ve spent most of the last two weeks complaining about Halo: CE Anniversary’s remastering, Halo 2’s is a bang-up job....

The testing aspect of this is going to focus on the campaign, which I know many people won’t pump the hours into as they might flipping jeeps in multiplayer. But having played both, lemme tell ya: the new, semi-open world sections of Halo Infinite’s campaign will make your hardware sweat more profusely than any multiplayer map or mode. By finding the specs and settings that produce smooth frame rates in the solo adventure, then, you’re effectively guaranteeing yourself good multiplayer performance in the process....

343 Industries explained that the issue was that they’d accidentaly included a bunch of concept art in the preview build. The concept art doesn’t give any spoilers, so 343 have decided to just release it anyway. Made by Square Enix’s Eidos Montreal studio, Human Revolution is a prequel to the merry adventures of JC Denton. It stars gruff cyborg Adam Jensen as he uncovers a global conspiracy by crawling through vents, stacking crates, hacking e-mails, and ejecting ball bearings from his hide at great velocity like murderous whiteheads. I remember being torn in the run-up to Human Revolution’s launch. At the time, I was still replaying the original Deus Ex every year or so, and more Deus Ex sounded great....

The absolute joy that is Yoku’s Island Express opened my eyes to what a video game could do with pinball elements, a few years back. And, in 2019, Creature In The Well did it all over again. Rather than a postbeetle-shaped ball, you’re essentially a moving flipper in this hack and slasher, tackling bumper-filled dungeons one room at a time. You do that with two tools: one that charges your balls and one that strikes them....

Death And Taxes is a genre-defying I-suppose-a-puzzle-game where you work as a new, junior Grim Reaper. This is an office job just like any other office job, it turns out, with a lot of admin and paperwork. Your supervisor gives you quotas for how many people you have to kill each day, and you can choose to ignore them or follow orders dutifully. But there are consequences. Since people can have a knock on effect on the world, whether they live or die can change the state it’s in (which, if you buy it with your hard earned deathbucks, is represented by a snowglobe geegaw you can keep on your desk)....

Apogee were the dons of PC platforming back in the early to mid Nineties. I suspect that was partly down to people having easy access to the games they published through shareware, such as id Software’s Commander Keen and Wolfenstein 3D. I can’t even remember now if I ever actually owned the whole of 1991’s Duke Nukem, but I played whatever portion I had repeatedly enough that it may as well have been a full game....

The demo mission took place in snowy Siberia. It was my first experience of playing a Hitman game, and I remember being entranced by the idea that I could steal someone’s costume and hide in plain sight. Every stealth game I’d played up until that point had been Big-Red-Exclamation-Point-Prevention: The Game, so walking among my prey felt liberating. And that walk, it was glorious. Animations were quite jagged in the early noughties, as opposed to the smooth strides of today....

The puzzle bits are physics-y, because as you travel deep into the neo-retro, corporate bowls of the Bradwell Foundation (a family owned but deeply sinister science and tech company) you get a magic 3D printer gun thing. It can gloop out a solid object of anything you have the blueprint for, so you can find interesting solutions to, for example, traversal puzzles. As I pointed out at the time of release, though, probably my favourite thing about The Bradwell Conspiracy is just how well it does the “business pretending that it’s one big happy family” thing....

Under the hood, KoF XIII takes some risks by giving players new techniques on top of the already complex 3v3 fighting that the series is known for. EX moves are now in the game, working in a similar way to Street Fighter games, but KoF XIII also tweaks other ridiculously named returning systems like “Hyper Drive Mode” and “Neo Max Desperation”. These allow you to cancel and link moves that would otherwise not be possible....

In my second playthrough, I defeated her on my first attempt, without hesitation or injury. Like all the best moments in Sekiro, it was relentless and beautiful. It showed me exactly how far I’d come. I was one of the select and lucky few who hadn’t really played any From Software games before Sekiro. I later learned that I’d consequently adapted relatively quickly to the graceful formula of parries and posture and standing your ground compared to all the die-hard Souls veterans, who were busily seething with frustration at how the old familiar dodge-heavy methods of the slower-paced Dark Souls would fail them time after time....

In their announcement, Blizzard said the Core Set is “intended to provide a modern collection of starting cards to players of all types and make Hearthstone even more approachable for newcomers.” Just like the Basic Set, you’ll earn Core Set cards by leveling each class up to ten. Neutral Core Set cards will unlock as you motor towards a collective class level of 60. Once the Core Set’s live, you’ll automatically get Core Set cards equal to your current level for each class....
