Doom Eternal isn’t a literal retreading of Id Software’s 1994 sequel. But from hell on Earth to colossal demonic goat-boss The Icon of Sin, it’s fair to call it a strong homage to Doom 2. As pointed out by RPS fanzine PC Gamer, the folks over on the Doom Subreddit found that Eternal’s nostalgia runs deeper still. Crushed by compression and colour limitations lurks Doom 2’s cover art, hidden inside the track “Welcome Home Great Slayer”....

EA Play costs £4/$5 month or £20/$30 a year, and will give you access to a library of older games, like The Sims 4, Battlefield V, a bunch of Fifas and Maddens, and a load of others. New releases take a few months to filter down, but it does have some like Rocket Arena. It also includes 10-hour trials of new games before they launch. EA Play Pro (formerly Origin Access Premier) will offer you that same library as well as full access to EA’s new games as they launch, though for the considerably higher price of £15/$15 a month or £90/$100 a year....

There’s a real “indie boom” energy to the game’s style - from a FEZ-style fake language to Hyper Light Drifter’s anthropomorphic swordsfolk and angular magic. There’s even a dreamy, mellow soundscape delivered by Dustforce composer Lifeformed....

Given that early access is for this sort of thing, I heartily recommend that devs Deli Interactive buff the energy bar, because a lot of the rest of it seems potentially very cool. I’m just not able to do anything apart from grub for berries or force my charges to fish right now. Your job in Camp Canyonwood, after making a very cute little bird avatar, is to entertain the child birds and generally look after them, while helping them earn badges....

Those pick-up patterns include cardiod (for when you’re sitting alone directly in front of the mic), omnidirectional (which picks up sound equally from all directions, like when you’re on a conference call, say), stereo (which uses the left and right channels for different sound sources) and bidirectional (which uses the front and back of the mic for interview-style situations) - just like your typical Blue Yeti USB mic. The new monument replaces a player-run project in the same area that ran for over 12 years, but might be in danger of disappearing due to recent game updates. An additional problem is that actually a lot of the individual items in the Cyberpunk Winter 20/21 collection are very strong, so virtually every piece is a statement piece by itself. This means the reality of literally every single V screenshot I have seen is less ‘cool-with-LED-lights-sewn-on jackets’ and more ‘I am letting my two-year-old dress themselves to avoid tantrums in the morning’.
