This transcript is just two questions and a follow-up, but runs to over 1500 words. The whole conversation I had with these two dudes was over 40 minutes long. So much of interviews gets discarded (like tears in rain etc) and the process of distilling it all down to a few quotes can be, to put it succinctly, a pain in the hole. Especially if your interview subject talks quickly....

Tyler McVicker of the Valve News Network was one such prodder, digging around on Twitch last night. Yup, he was soon scampering about with standard controls and no goggles. It’s no surprise that so much of a regular FPS is in the engine. It is kinda neat that people found it so quickly. Though yesterday’s patch also disabled some of the vital commands. As with Chesses’ grab-bag of weird and wonderful Chess remixes, Barr’s new sequel is a free browser game offering eight remixes of the thousand-year-old board game - ranging from immediate gags to fascinating new puzzle scenarios. Fog entrusts players to look away from the screen during the other’s turn, each side’s view obscured by their own RTS-style fog of war. Musical turns the position of each piece into notes on a repeating tracker....
“Now that I’m older and wiser,” Barr says on his website, “I’ve come to feel that hiding the objects was a bit too cute (I was thinking about the artist Gregor Schneider at the time, for what it’s worth) and that it would have been better to make the objects visible.” That’s exactly what Barr’s done, raising them to sit on top of the cubes they were formerly hidden inside....
The news comes from Wolpaw’s recent interview with YouTuber DidYouKnowGaming, which is also worth a watch to learn about all the ideas Valve didn’t wind up using in Portal 2. At one point it had bullet time. In Wolpaw’s exact words, “Jay and I have an idea that we think is pretty awesome for what would happen, generally speaking”. It’s worth quoting his caveats in full, mind: Interestingly, Wolpaw reckons one of the big reasons Valve haven’t made a game with a three in it is because developers tend to be more interested in making sequels than threequels....

There’s a half-hour with devs Arkane Austin starting at 6.15pm BST/7.15pm BST/10.15am PST today, which promises “new insights, gameplay details and more”. A little bit later at 9.30pm BST/10.30pm CEST/1.30pm PST today, there’s a stream with members of the Fallout 76 team looking at the new Expeditions beyond the game’s setting of Appalachia, which I reported on back in June....
Each of Downpour’s five new playable slugcats will have their own abilities and storyline, and there are ten new regions to explore which each have their own new enemies, traps and weather to deal with. There are also two new modes: Challenge mode, featuring handmade arenas of escalating difficulty; and Safari mode, through which you can revisit past areas as an observer or as other, non-slugcat creatures. Downpour also adds co-op for the first time, in which up to four players can play locally and explore “all base-game campaigns” together....
The cooperative FPS, which sees tacticool murderers battling mutated monsters, is launching on January 20th. And that very day it will be available on PC Game Pass, as well as Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. That really is a surprise, even after Ubisoft had previously lowered its price and announced buddy passes. Ubisoft also announced today that Rainbow Six Siege is coming to PC Game Pass too, having previously been on Xbox Game Pass....
Over on its website, Extraction has revealed half of its operators so far, including the likes of Sledge, Doc, Pulse, and Finka, among others. Just don’t expect those yet to be announced to be brand new faces. It may be a Rainbow Six spinoff, but it’s going to be bringing the operators you already know to fight off those zombie hordes. “Sure, we had some discussions about creating brand new operators, but we felt that bringing the current ones in another context (PVE) was simply the best way to add new layers of lore and to shine a new light on them,” game director Patrik Méthé tells The Loadout....
There’s a white rabbit, guardsmen decked out with playing cards, and what looks like a robot version of Tweedle-dum and Tweedle-dee each wielding a giant hammer. Most intimidatingly though, what appears to be a version of the Queen of Hearts has become some kind of many-armed, snake-tongued giant beast whose face has split open like a Demogorgon from Stranger Things. You play as Ravenlok. Guess she’s the bad-ass cousin of Goldilocks?...
Much like Razer’s regular optical switches, these new analog optical switches use beams of light to register each key press. This makes them very fast compared to your typical mechanical keyboard, and more durable, too, as there are fewer moving parts. In order to replicate the feel of an analog stick, however, Razer’s analog optical switches can now measure how much light goes through the switch so it knows how far down it’s being pressed, letting you creep forward instead of breaking into a full run, for example....
