Heartworm is the tale of a young woman who sets out to visit a spooky abandoned house where, supposedly, one room lets you see people you’ve lost. Don’t worry about the fact that everyone who has tried to find it has vanished. Explore, solve puzzles, get snared in something awful, fight back using a camera. It’s a good time. It has a great late-nineties feel, including lovely unfiltextured textures, raw dithering, and Resident Evil-style door opening animations, not to mention the Lara Croft shorts and curious solitary giant tattoo adorning our protagonist....

Trains can now collide with each other, see, so you’ll need to manage them if you don’t want to be forever running around mashing E to right derailed carriages. The new signalling system runs on two train signals, Block Signals and Path Signals, to let you route choo-choos without kersploding. You can create train timetables with a bit of logic too, controlling what the train will do at the station....

When I spoke to Daniel Olsén, one of the soundtrack’s composers, he shared that Swedish developer Simogo didn’t intentionally give Sayonara Wild Hearts such a distinct queer vibe. I appreciate the idea that today’s increasingly banal culture is mostly derived from the gobbled-up and regurgitated wreckage of decades past, so ten house points go to the devs for that....

Most of what I’ve seen of Serious Sam 4 so far has been fairly low-key so while the joke of a Papal mech doesn’t tickle my funnybone (honestly, Warhammer 40k has been doing saintly battlemechs for years and so much more delightfully extravagantly), I am up into how big and loud and stompy and meaty all this is. Circle-strafing around arenas is nice and all but I most fondly remember Serious Sam for spectacle....

They really aren’t messing about either. The landscaping team have introduced some “major changes to the geography of Cyrodiil”, and they’re exercising a little creative license to add greater drama to Oblivion’s high fantasy world. Expect higher mountains, longer shores, larger forests and “swampier swamps”, all with snazzy finer details. You know, like nice looking bark on trees and thick flora. Love me some flora, to be fair. It’s this use of creative license that’s particularly interesting, I think....

This isn’t really one of those times, because I think I’d be recommending Songs Of Conquest overall as it is anyway. Giving it an estimated year for Lavapotion to “figure out, together with the community, what features we should prioritize” could well push me into a wholehearted endorsement, though. The natural thing is to compare Songs Of Conquest to Heroes Of Might And Magic. Unfortunately, I have only the dimmest memories of one of those games, which never grabbed me....

Ubisoft are, of course, also currently being heavily criticised by their own staff. Earlier this month, employee group A Better Ubisoft started a petition, open to all, asking for support in pursuing their demands. Steam’s big demo bashes were still finding their cadence last year at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. Now that they’ve picked up the Next Fest name, it seems that Valve have settled on a set of expectations we’ll be seeing for each event going forward. Over in their Partner portal they reiterate that this time around participating demos should be for unreleased games that are publicly “coming soon” and intended to be released between October 7, 2021 and May 1, 2022....
