Alas, the RX 6500 XT isn’t just an inferior low-end option to the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 (one of the best graphics cards, and perhaps the outright best for budget builds right now). It’s an offputtingly slow, sometimes bizarrely-designed GPU in general; instead of providing long-overdue relief to a truly fudged hardware market, it ends up feeling like more an attempt to just sell any old second-rate kit to an audience that’s been left desperate for something, anything that’s new and somewhat affordable....

The Spellbound Collection Event kicks off on January 10th, and includes “24 Legendary skins for Vantage, Seer, Mad Maggie, Mirage and more”. If you unlock all of them you also get Seer’s new Heirloom, the “Showstoppers”. It started off the trend where every even-numbered game was the fun one. A refreshing renaissance, set in 15th century Italy, where Ezio Auditore da Firenze would sprint over the rooftops of Florence and Venice. It embraced the inherent nonsense of the concept like a stabby soap opera, with a lot of shouting about death and honour....

On your Viking adventures, you can stumble upon a spiky-haired man named Keith, hanging out with a band in Essex (or Essexe), the home county of The Prodigy. Chatting with him starts a world event (Valhalla’s version of sidequests) as he invites you to come and dance along to some tunes. The song played to dear Eivor includes the lyrics “Smack my bishop!” which is just perfect. Jake tells me there’s a note nearby with the lyrics to the song Charly as well....

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey remains one of the most demanding games you can play on PC right now, but having taken a closer look at Ubisoft’s recently released PC requirements for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, it looks like Eivor and the rest of their Viking pals will be sticking a much heavier boot into our PC’s performance than even Kassandra’s mighty Spartan kick. In short, they’re proper demanding these Valhalla specs, as what once passed for Ubisoft’s recommended 4K spec in Odyssey is now only suitable for High at 1080p in ye olde England....

Cos Baby Yoda blew Alderaan Academy away at the acapella riff-off when he rolled the Cantina theme into Duel Of The Fates....

The basic premise: you’re a cute critter headed into dungeons, bashing baddies and gathering loot along the way. With full knowledge of the enemy’s next move each turn, you use limited supplies of energy and mana to swing swords, cast spells, apply (and suffer) buffs and debuffs, block attacks, and such. Except you have no character class and don’t equip any spells or items. Your build is determined by the items crammed into your massive backpack, and everything you are carrying is always equipped....

Come watch the developers natter all about it in a festive edition of one of their Panels From Hell. One of them is dressed up as a knitting reindeer, and they just announced critical role chap Matthew Mercer will voice a new character. Those Paladin’s pack multiple subclasses, initially based on whether you choose to take the Oath of the Ancients or the Oath of Devotion. There’s also a hidden Oathbreaker subclass “that triggers if you break your oath”, which is a neat idea....

Along with the news that Battlefield 2042 is coming to subscription services next month, the dev team have shared their plans for Season 3 and later updates. A new map, new Specialist, and weapons are all inbound with the next season, along with a fresh battle pass. There’ll also be reworks for the Manifest and Breakaway maps. I’d glimpsed the trailer, but I think I had my headphones off or skimmed it out of habit (most trailers are not very good or clear and after looking at hundreds every week, I mean, I’m not apologising). And it’s good. It’s really good. But that’s not all. It’s a collaborative work that started out with a chiptune track by Inverse Phase, with beats and accompaniment added later by 2 Mello....

I’ve had an eye on All Quiet Roads for months, but between Tile Cities and Blink Planets it seemed a bit much to throw this recommendation at you as well. But a game exclusively about the thing I hate most holding my interest this well has to be respected. All Quiet Roads also balances relaxing, freeform play with stressful, occasionally overwhelming challenges, giving it a tonal variety that I wasn’t really expecting from such a simple concept....

Its design is certainly a lot less ‘gamery’ than its AOC rival, although its chunky (and mildly old-fashioned-looking) brown speaker grille and central ambient light sensor won’t be to everyone’s tastes, either. If you can get past its rather dated bronzed look, though, then this is one gaming monitor that won’t be an embarrassment to have on your desk. It even has a USB-C port accompanying its pair of HDMI 2....
