Yesterday, Tez2 - a regular and reliable source of information on GTA games - tweeted that a “reliable source” had told them the remasters were planned a few years ago, but that Rockstar “chose not to proceed” and that “the poor reception of the Trlogy DE might be a reason”. Kotaku have since reported that they’ve spoken to their own Rockstar sources, and confirmed that Rockstar had “shelved all remakes” and were focusing on development of GTA6....

The original version of Rocket Arena was a mod for Quake, which your dad will wrongly tell you was about more than just being brown and overrated. Its popularity led to spin off mods in pretty much the whole series. The general idea was to level the playing field, removing health and weapon pickups, and giving everyone the same equipment. Interestingly, the new, standalone Rocket Arena is almost the opposite of that concept, as it’s a class-based shooter with a form of regenerating health....

During the morning, we checked out Demonschool by Ysbryd games, an Into the Breach meets Persona turn-based RPG about a group of collage students who fight demons, ghouls and zombie yakuza on a mysterious island careening toward a demonic apocalypse. Our first interview of the day was with Brainwash Gang’s Edu Verz on the chaotic deckbuilding FPS Friends Vs Friends. Liam and I were completely blown away by the deckbuilding and card abilities making it jump straight to the top of our PAX indie gems list....

The upside - besides Santo Ileso being a generally nice place to visit, as Alice Bee found in her Saints Row review - is that it’s playable on low-end and luxury hardware alike. And, to its credit, there’s a healthy list of customisable graphics options too. I’ve therefore embraced the past, and spent hours in testing to find out how you can tweak Saints Row’s settings for the best possible performance....

I feel it’s been an eternity since I last saw Beware, the horror game about horrible car chases through dark countryside and villages. A big fan of this simulation-shattering glitching in Yuha’s Nightmares (coming to Steam). I am delighted that Hyper Demon (the surprise sequel to Devil Daggers) is already inspiring admirers. A lovely friend in lagmorph platformer Lapin (coming to Steam). A striking new title screen for tactical mech game Vactics (in early access on Steam)....

The marquee change is of course the spooky ghost ships. They can pop up around the sea to bother you just like skeleton ships and megalodons but can be called up on cue for a fight as well. Rare say that ghost ships are more agile than other enemies on the seas. You’ll have to dodge their creepy phantom cannonballs and mines that float in the water. If you send the whole fleet back to the bottom of the sea, you’ll do battle with Flameheart’s flagship the Burning Blade....

I’ve spent quite a bit of time admiring everyone’s images there recently. I don’t always have time to jump into a game and see these views for myself, and I miss just sitting by the real-life ocean a lot, so it’s a nice compromise. The new progression system is the most significant overhaul the game has ever had. Ten tiers of ten levels, rewarding persistent pirates with in-game cosmetics as they play. The system is built to reward you no matter how you play. Everyday activities like fishing and fighting will boost you up the tiers, or you can focus on progression and complete the game’s Trials. These are designed to “test your adventuring, exploring and battling capabilities,” and will come with significant XP boosts....

That’s a striking look, that. Some dramatic camera angles. The kind of look traditionally reserved for puzzle-platformers about pushing crates onto switches. No, here we’ll be fighting swordsmen and supernatural entities (with what Devolver call “a streamlined combat system based around the traditional weapons of the samurai”) as the young duty-bound samurai Hiroki goes “beyond life and death”. Yeah but does he need to stack crates to reach a ladder to death?...

The Awakened follows on from Chapter One by finding out what young Sherl is up to now he’s returned to London. It’s his first major case, y’see. Oh and hey, Watson’s back! Except this is their meet-cute investigation now. Let’s just blame the dark god Cthulhu and his followers, who Holmes and Watson have to contend with while they search for a missing person. You’ll travel with the dynamic duo who aren’t Batman and Robin to London, Switzerland, New Orleans and the Scottish Highlands....

When you first install the game you’ll be given the option to chuck in an extra 20GB download for some ‘HD textures’. If you refuse to download it, you can find it again under the ‘Owned DLC’ tab on the game page....

Bones began as a multiplayer-focused expansion for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, but it’s since morphed into its own optionally-multiplayer open world pirate ’em up. You can clearly see the Creediness in the footage above, though you’ll only stop off on islands for shopping and exploring rather than stabbing. The devs talk about how every ship you see wil belong to its own faction, with visual clues to tip you off to how much cargo they’re carrying....

At least it’s (sea)faring better than three other unannounced Ubisoft games, which have been cancelled thanks to Ubisoft’s general underperforming sails. Sorry, sales. The news comes from Ubisoft’s extremely business-ey annoucement, which is essentially a long letter attempting to reassure shareholders. They claim they’re struggling thanks to a continued industry shift “towards mega-brands and long-lasting titles”, highlighting how the latest entries to their own mega-brands (Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry and assorted Tom Clancys) have been invested in but haven’t come out yet....

The modders working on the Shirley companion mod recently released a teaser video which you can watch below. It begins with a montage of Curry’s video opening catchphrase and ends with the in game version of the Skyrim grandma turning around to greet the Dragonborn with a “hello grandkid!” In a Reddit thread for the teaser trailer, modders have answered common questions about the Shirley mod, including their hopes to release it sometime this month....

Okay but back over to us briefly. I’ll just recap our recommendations: a big blast of 13 to get us started; the Pony Island fella’s card game, Inscryption; hybrid citybuilder/tower defence/RTS Diplomacy Is Not An Option; silly physics game Exhausted Man; sure the new Starship Troopers RTS is okay; the Hollow Knight-esque Haiku The Robot; storyboard-building puzzle game Storyteller; and ‘Morrowind in hell’ RPG Dread Delusion. My highlight was Dread Delusion....

Speaking to IGN, Bungie COO Patrick O’Kelley explained how the Destiny developers were able to react to the outbreak so quickly. Part of that was just general emergency preparedness. The Bungie offices are located in an earthquake zone and experience heavy snowfalls during winter, so having reasonable work-from-home solutions in place is sort of a given. But Bungie’s relationship with Chinese publisher NetEase also gave them a glimpse at how the pandemic could play out....
