Maclean’s passing was noted by members of the retro games community. “Shocked and saddened to hear that legendary C64 programmer Archer Maclean passed away yesterday. He produced some of the machine’s greatest games, including International Karate and my all-time favorite shooter on the system, Dropzone. My heart goes out to his family.”, wrote games journalist Jaz Rignall on Twitter. In the ’80s, Maclean developed fighting games International Karate and sequel IK+, before developing Jimmy White’s Whirlwind Snooker and Archer Maclean’s Pool and several sequels in the ’90s....

I went in with expectations that it might be a little like BioShock, all steely and serious in its delivery of some vaguely philosophical truth. But I emerged with a totally different impression. Far from polished seriousness, Atomic Heart seems a little disjointed in its ambition, with a main character who almost immediately kills any atmosphere when he opens his mouth. Atomic Heart’s opening moments are easily its most impressive, as you, Major Nechaev, are ushered along the sunny streets of a USSR whose residents brim with positivity and cheer....

The most recent entry in the Battlefield franchise, last year’s Battlefield 2042, is sitting at around ten times fewer concurrent players than Battlefield 1. Of course, part of this sudden influx in players will be down to Battlefield 1 being cheap as chips on Steam right now. Yet Battlefield V is still seeing more players than 2042, too. Bugs! You absolutely love to see them, at least when they’re not game-breaking. The most common one I came across was the floating, seated man. These were the corpses of poor players who had perished in the explosion of a tank or jeep, whose souls were clearly not ready to leave said vehicle. There are plenty of games that let you be evil. Often dramatically so, favouring murder and sadism and cruelty simply because that’s the mathematical opposite of what the heroes are like in cartoons. It’s usually boring, and in any case, Riders don’t really have a concept of good vs evil like we do. I had to editorialise a lot when looking around for mods for Terraria: there’s a bewildering amount. I didn’t want to overwhelm things with content mods, because there’s an issue of balance with some of the larger mods. As much as I love OTT boss battles, I generally prefer Terraria’s mods to feel like part of the original game. The rest are QoL addons, because there’s nothing better than wrangling the vast, unwieldy systems of Terraria into something just a tad more manageable....

Along the way you grow in power and skill, using different types of arrows with your bow, as well as lures and spells. I like Blacktail because it’s a little bit janky in ways that don’t break the game, and is absolutely committed to its own particular flavour of odd....

“The game will place players in the shoes of Sam, a freshman at Arbor’s famed, yet mysterious, Academy,” say Pine Studio. “The puzzles will guide the players through the central story of the game and the mystery looming over the school.” The Academy’s new trailer below gives a glance at a few bits like electric statues, water puzzles, a spooky red moon. Pine Studio say that The Academy pulls a lot of inspiration from Hogwarts, of which they’re fans, but also from the architecture of their own city Zagreb in Croatia....

In terms of how the puzzles actually work, it’s kind of like Stephen’s Sausage Roll, in that you must move a thing in a very precise way to get it in a fire, but with more vertical bits and significantly fewer sausages. In every level you have a box of things, and your little voxel man in a bomber jacket must burn it. Only the bonfire is almost always up a small cliff, which means placing a bunch of other boxes down first to create a route to it....
