Gun Rounds straddles a strange line, trading in Pokemon battles by way of Downwell’s gunboots. However, we’re seeing a decent bit of experimentation with new cards from Ashes of Outland. The Dark Portal and Enhanced Dreadlord are here to cheat out big minions, and Kanrethad Ebonlocke (plus Kanrethad Prime) work fantastically with Handlock. I got it when it launched in 2018, and I liked it for precisely 10 hours of play - I thought the visuals and the music were superb, but it felt a little empty on day one for my liking. Nevertheless, after two years of regular updates, I have returned to it, and it’s lovely. It might only be 10 hours’ worth of lovely this time, too, before the core appeal fades, but then it will have been 20 hours, which is almost a full day, innit....

I did, thankfully, play both games in the right order when I finally pestered my parents enough to get me a PS2 a few months later, so a lot of my initial FFX-2 fever had worn off by the time I eventually got round to playing it. Currently in early access on steam, Food Chain is a completely nuts scrap between animals from bears and boars to goats and owls. Instead of being pushed inwards by a circle of gas/storm/whatever in-universe excuse can be thought of in other battle royales, in Food Chain you’re pulled towards the centre of the map by a finite watering hole. Everyone else is trying to get their fill, and you have to fight it out against other beasts to be the last one standing....

It’s a classic coming of age tale. As a young, fragile robot, BUD’s wobbly, procedurally generated limbs feel like you’re controlling a newborn lamb when he first touches down on the low, sandy beach of this strange new planet. He’s all knees and elbows, and it can take some time before you feel like you’ve truly found your feet. By the end, though, you’re a bounding, confident robo-ram, leaping across the landscape and flinging yourself from the sides of its floating islands in search of new footholds below, all so you can bring home those all important star plant seeds to your beloved MOM....

My feelings about mushrooms as a concept are complicated and often fluctuate, so these days if I think about it too long She Remembered Caterpillars is close to being a horror game for me. So let’s not think about it too long. The idea on each level is to get a little walking spore to the an exit platform, whereupon it will grow little organic helicopter blades and fly off....

There is an overarching plot to do with a waif and/or stray that Holmes has adopted, and a sexy and mysterious neighbour who recently moved in. But the standalone cases are lovely little investigative gems (excluding, perhaps, the one where Holmes imaginates his way through what happened at a temple he has never been to based on looking at a small model of it in a bowls pavilion, or something)....

Good thing, then, that Immortals Fenyx Rising is indeed a special game. In fact, it’s a strong contender for the best game of 2020 in my book. Immortals Fenyx Rising inherits several traits from other Ubisoft open-world games, and takes inspiration from Breath Of The Wild for nearly everything else. Everything it does oozes quality and thought, from the easy to grasp and satisfying multi-weapon combat to the huge number of puzzles and encounters dotted about the Golden Isle, the world upon which lowly Fenyx has been let loose....

It works because its cast of mostly B-listers are talented enough to pull off its many FMV and in-mission voice scenes, and they’re clearly having fun. The characters aren’t complicated but they’re charismatic and memorable. The headliner is of course Maniac, aka Biff From Back To The Future, as the insufferable ace who falls apart when given the command post he craves. But Mark Hamill holds his own as the weary, traumatised commander, and then there’s the technician who the player meekly submits to when she constantly slags him off for getting shot at....

If I had to pick which game Haven Park was more heavily influenced by, I would probably say it’s definitely more Animal Crossing than it is A Short Hike. As I’ve been exploring the island and discovering new campsites to fix up, I’ve been picking up sticks, logs and mushrooms and rummaging through barrels for materials such as metal and fabric so I can fill said sites with cool, fun things like tents, firepits, barbecue stations, beach umbrellas and more....
