The closed beta in April must have gone well enough that they’re comfortable letting me in to poke around. I spent this morning enjoying the novelty of being able to click on Xbox 360 exclusive Fable II and having it just work. That’s not to say it was a perfect experience, though. These aren’t PC games you’re streaming, even when there’s a PC version available. You’re forced to play as you would on a console, so for things like FPS games you’re stuck with a controller....
I had a go of that demo when it was available back in January, and it was a good time. It’s Zelda-ish through and through. You adventure across an overworld, descend into dungeons, and progress via a mixture of sword and shield combat, and light environment puzzles. Even the four-player co-op mode makes it reminscent of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures on the Gamecube. Where it differs is where the “Rogue” in the name comes in....

Pretty standard day, really. The aliens are after using humans as drugs, which is just weird but right up Roiland’s avenue....
You’re a grape named Concord, the new village guardian here to help your neighbors, do some gardening, and revitalise the island. Everyone else also appears to either be produce or a frog. There’s a mysterious rot that’s brought low the little Autumn Town and Concord’s got to prune it back. I popped the demo in for a quick snack and found just what I was looking for off the bat....

After that, the remainder of the year is labeled with unspecified “multiple updates and improvements”. The free DLCs are still planned, coming in the middle of the year. The PC port seems mainly to be bringing graphical bells and whistles of the kind you’d hope for. It can run at 4K, it’s got ultrawide monitor support, an unlocked framerate, higher detail and longer draw distances, and support for keyboards and different controllers. Horizon: Zero Dawn was the first game Sony ported to PC and its launch didn’t go smoothly, with crashes, a jerky framerate and bugs such as Aloy getting trapped as a child forever....

Deflector is like someone taped two swords to a boomerang, Mad Max-style. How does the boomerang still operate with twin blades slashing back and forth on either end? Don’t know. How does it always circle its way back to where you’re standing after dashing around an arena filled with enemies? Not a clue. That’s Deflector’s very simple premise: carve your way through rooms of monsters, all of which are trying to kill you with outstretched appendages, gnashing teeth, and deadly orbs zig-zagging in your direction....
There’s a good reason for this, though, and it’s one that actually enhanced my experience of the game as opposed to detracting from it. You see, while heroine Kathy might look like an auto-climbing Lara Croft-stronaut, with her pair of pickaxes dangling off her suit, in practice she’s anything but. In fact, when she’s climbing up and down walls, Kathy has more in common with Grow Home’s little BUD bot than anyone else - albeit with a significantly higher polygon count....
Might And Delight say they’re adding two more levels to be explored. “A mountainous forest level to the west and a hidden underground outmark called the ‘Underbelly’”. There’s no clear release date for these things, but they say they’re aiming to have them “completed and rolled out in the near future”. We’ve also been treated to a single screenshot of what’s presumably the forest level. I can’t tell if it’s spooky or tranquil....
