It also feels like 15 years since Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord entered Early Access in late March 2020. At that time, it felt far too leaky to write conclusively about. Even after some urgent patching, I had too many reservations to give it more than a “wait and see” recommendation. But how’s it looking now? Well. It’s definitely better. And yet it still gives me disquiet. Let’s be rational, and consider Bannerlord’s biggest problems at launch: its plethora of technical issues....
Really, it’s kind of incredible how much personality and lore you end up imposing on this sprawling, blocky island. You start parsing what counts for switches, ditches and pillars with amazing alacrity, and there’s a part of me that likes to think of its tiny black pixel hero as some kind of long-lost cousin of Patrick’s Parabox - a square friend who’s slipped down one of its many infinite wormholes to find themselves washed ashore on the ruins of a strange, monster-filled island....
You turn up on said ship after things have gone a bit tits up, obviously. Your sister was one of the scientists working on the ship, and she was doing something to do with time, which is obviously an inadvisable thing to do. You navigate the ship, occasionally making contact with her, Tesla himself, and a paternal and helpful third scientist trapped near the engines. The pacing for the first half of the game really is excellent....
Homeworld chucks you into the role of fleet commander, tasked with leading the Kushans across the galaxy to their stolen planet of origin, Kharak. Unlike other, ground-bound RTS experiences back then, it allows you to move units in three dimensions. This was cool enough, but the core conceit of producing all your units from the weirdly vertical Kushan mothership – at least until you got some carriers up and running – makes the whole effort seem terrifyingly vital....
Players in Hunt: Showdown take on the role of hunters with a contract to kill an AI “boss” monster hiding somewhere on the map. On the way you must use your Dark Sight to find clues which will narrow down the location of the boss so you can defeat it, banish it, collect the two tokens that the banished boss drops, and then leave at one of the extraction points on the edges of the map....
Rather than have you hacking and slashing through room after room, this RPG’s combat centres on sport. Specifically, three-on-three matches on relatively small courts. The goal is simple: smash a glow-y orb into the opponents’ pyre enough times that it extinguishes. But, unlike basketball, Pyreball is a contact sport, so you have to decide whether it’s more beneficial to go for the ball or take out the winger that’s making a run from inside for possession....
I’m not the biggest Metroidvania-liker, probably because I’m not very good at all the backtracking necessary to progress in these sorts of games, but SteamWorld Dig 2 is different. Objectives boil down to “dig down to this spot”, and I really appreciate the simplicity. I’m not going in circles walking through endless doorways, but just clinking my pickaxe against rocks towards a big X below me. It’s the stuff you get from bashing all these rocks that really gets me all hot and sooty, though....
I can’t quite say that Mass Effect: Andromeda’s multiplayer improved upon its predecessor in every way. But in every way that mattered, it was more of the same. And therefore it, too, is glorious. I was on the fence for a while though. I could see that it was the same basic formula of running about killing waves of enemies and completing missions, and I should have loved it from day one....

On Friday night, just after the opening ceremony of Blizzcon, I interviewed Ben Lee and Nathan Lyons-Smith, Hearthstone’s game director and production director, about the game’s future. We talked about the proliferation of ways to play, the mechanics of the upcoming Mercenaries mode, and the curbing of some of the randomness in constructed play. For starters, we have tomatoangus’ run of the Fallout Anthology. Tomatoangus (or tomatoanus to his friends) did a brilliant run through every Fallout game, from 1 through 4 including New Vegas (sorry Fallout Tactics and 76, you weren’t invited), clocking in at just over two hours. So Hot Wheels Unleashed, a new just-announced Hot Wheel racing game, has my attention. None of that is actual game footage, but it’s basically Trackmania, right? Cars go fast, tracks twist and loop-de-loop, and you can construct your own tracks. Where it maybe differs most is that those tracks are zooming through real world locations at the sale of the toys, so your backdrops will be tables and living room floors....

Gore Magala fight walkthrough Gore Magala has a variety of hard-hitting attacks that deal large amounts of physical and dragon damage. Many of these attacks also inflict Frenzy, an ailment unique to Gore Magala. Rather than a single icon, Frenzy adds a small, purplish-blue meter that fills over time and as you take more Frenzy attacks. You can’t cure Frenzy with nullberries or other normal methods, so we’ll cover it in a bit more detail below....
