It’s all impressive, but I’m most enamoured with the work of pro player “Lethamyr”, who moonlights as a modder turning Rocket League into pinball, pool, beer pong and prop hunt. Here’s YouTuber “SunlessKhan” getting a tour of nine mod maps from the man himself. I’ve skipped halfway through so you jump straight into the pinball, though the whole vid is worth a watch (despite Khan being far too keen on the word insane)....

There were just over half a dozen TinyBuild games on show at PAX East this year, including Hello Neighbor 2, the upcoming sequel to Dynamic Pixels’ creepy survival stalk’em up, as well as Tinykin, a Pikmin-esque 2.5D adventure game - and if you haven’t played the Steam demo yet, I’d highly recommend it. Arena shooter Rawmen was also in attendance, as well the aforementioned Spiderheck and Potion Craft: Alchemist Simulator (the former of which also has a Steam demo you can enjoy at home)....

Galen Drew’s dreamy landscapes seem almost deliberately accidental, with what little context surrounding the world reflecting a sense of finding meaning in hindsight....

As CJ reported last week, Frogwares now intend to close the circle by pitting hot Holmes against (hot?) Cthulhu creatures in a remake of 2007’s The Awakened. Its Kickstarter project launched today and there’s a reveal trailer below. Frogwares describe the project as a “ground up” remake of The Awakened, with a completely rewritten story so that it acts as a continuation from Chapter One. It sounds, really, like it’s less a remake than a total do-over of the common idea of pitting Sherlock Holmes against tentacle monsters....

When Sifu starts, though, something feels slightly off. It’s raining ominously for one, and (maybe more immediately noticeable), you’re not playing as the guy on the box art. In fact, you’re the main villain. You rock up to a kung fu school with four of your best buds, kill everybody you run into, and then make like a tree and get outta there. One of the victims caught in the murderous rampage happens to be our real main character, who was 12 at the time....

The footage shows Sonic running across grassy and flower-covered fields, collecting rings while running along rails, and spinning his head against various mysterious-looking robots. There’s also possibly a moment where he interacts with a hamster wheel to scan a new area of the map. Extremely open world game design. This video is released as a tease for a month of further information about the game to be released via IGN, with the first story to appear tomorrow at 9am PST/12pm EST/5pm BST....

Elden Ring has been a huge success for FromSoftware since its release in February, selling millions of copies. It’s no surprise then that, in a climate where developers, publishers and intellectual property are being bought up on a regular basis, FromSoft have attracted some interest from bigger companies. Today’s deal cost ¥36.4 billion (£225 million). FromSoft say they’ll use the money to invest in “more powerful game IP” and “establish a framework that allows the expansion of the scope of its own publishing in the significantly growing global market”....

Fights In Tight Spaces is a big old mashup of deck building and turn-based tactics and, somehow, action movie fight scenes. “Learn to balance your hand, momentum, and positioning to overcome the odds to defeat your adversaries,” developers Ground Shatter say. “Build your deck, control the space and live to fight another day.” At early access launch, Ground Shatter say Fights In Tight Spaces is made up of five levels and 150 cards to build your deck with....

As you might have guessed from the name, Gordon Galaxy is an extremely thinly veiled take on Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy. It puts you in the role of the eponymous Gordon, for a third-person action adventure romp supported by the rest of his crew, the Funny Space Mates. There’s the hulking Drinx, whose cybergoth Kratos makeover just about makes him legally distinct from Dave Bautista’s Drax, plus the sobre-minded green assassin Gammono, the walking shrub Good (catchphrase: “I’m Good!...

I particularly like the way trees whip out then open up. Luminous showed this during CEDEC2020, the Computer Entertainment Developers Conference, in a talk titled “Filling an Open World in a Natural yet Intentional Way - Luminous Engine’s Approach to Procedural Generation”. Obviously the full extent of what’s going on isn’t clear without the accompanying talk, which isn’t yet public, but you can see lots of places where it seems the user changes the land or broadly paints an area then lots of contextually-appropriate little details spring into place....

At this point, Stardew Valley feels ubiquitous. It has sold millions of copies and its regularly discounted, so there’s a fairly good chance that you already own it. The real appeal of it coming to Game Pass, for me, is that it should make it easier to convince friends to play it co-operatively. “I’m happy to announce that Stardew Valley will be coming to Game Pass,” said Barone. “There’s not like a set release date yet, but it’s probably sometime in the fall....

SGDQ’s been happening since 2011, so the many speedrunners who’ve taken part have generated quite a sum for charity in that time. The summer events alone have raised a total of $18.9 million (£15.6 million) for Doctors Without Borders and the Organisation For Autism Research. Games Done Quick’s events have netted close to $41 million (£33.8 million) for various causes over the past twelve years. This year’s SGDQ runs are all archived on the event’s YouTube channel now, if you missed them....

Like other auto-battlers, Super Auto Pets is a round-based game where you build a team to battle opponents doing the same, aiming to hit 10 wins in a run without losing all your lives. Between rounds you can shop, buying new units, combining units of the same type to level them up, buying buffs, and paying to roll for fresh offerings on the shop shelves. Then they go off and fight as you watch....

You play as Morgan, a mercenary who can dive into an alterate reality known as the Bast. Each level takes place on a single layer of the Bast, and the idea is to keep diving deeper and deeper until you find what your client’s looking for. In each layer, you’ll need to protect various modulators from coming under attack, beating back waves of baddies as they make a beeline for them across its isometric grid....

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford – who stepped aside as head of Gearbox Software last October – dropped the existence of the project right at the end of the PAX East presentation while wearing some shockingly Borderlands-yellow chinos.
