I’m wary of treating negative Steam reviews as a metric uncritically, especially given the rise of review bombing, but yeah lots of complaints seem legit. Some are straight-up unhappy with the game Dice intended to make, not liking what it does differently, or the absence of familiar features (like the traditional scoreboard), or balance issues (hello, hovercraft!), and so on. Those are critical matters, on which I’ll defer to the Battlefield 2042 review our Ed is working on right now....

Next week’s release was confirmed via Twitter, at the same time as the lengthy 3.2 patch notes. Dice say they’d normally put out patch notes the day before an update drops, but they want to give players more of a heads-up in future. Psychonauts is classic Double Fine. The new map, Al Mazrah, mixes desert landscapes with urban environments and a river. The latter is important as Modern Warfare 2’s various modes now support swimming and aquatic combat. That includes “clandestine swimming up river tributaries, underwater ambushes and exploration, as well as quicker movement courtesy of the RHIB or Armored Patrol Boat,” according to the Call Of Duty site. How everything behave in panels is contextual, building on their innate character, relationships established in previous panels, and what’s already happened. You know where each puzzle’s story is headed but you need to figure out how to reach there, starting with a series of empty comic panels. You have to, you know, tell a story. It is fun to play with the different elements, figure out possible interactions, then eventually twig how it all comes together....
