Following the expensive marketing barrage we’ve experienced over the past few weeks, tonight’s EEK3 showcase is promising an altogether more “grimey” event. A movement of sorts that’s sprung up over the last year, Haunted PS1 is a loose community of indie devs and hobbyists creating horror games rooted in the aesthetics of the 90s. Following in the footsteps of contemporary developers like Kitty Horrorshow and Paratopic developers Arbitrary Metric, Haunted PS1 previously showed off a slew of low-poly scares with the Haunted PS1 Demo Disk....

A Normal Lost Phone allows you to satisfy the secret snoop that’s hidden within all of us. At the start of the game you find a phone, and must pour through its files, emails and DMs to work out what happened to its owner Sam. It all plays out in a stylised phone OS, adding an extra layer of immersion as you do your sleuthing. Many of the phone’s folders and files are password protected but give hints that the keys to opening them can be found in another part of the phone....

It’s the city, mostly. Harran has no business being so beautiful. It helps enormously that its fictional geography and architecture mark it as vaguely Turkish, with perhaps a hint of Brazil, rather than the universal video game city of Sigh New York Yet Again. Harran is lush, teeming with detail, and feels like it was probably untidy even before its localised apocalypse. Its inhabitants too are a great looking bunch....

One night in ‘04, while I was googling away for ones I hadn’t played before, I came across Exmortis, which is, granted, kind of an escape the room game (more accurately an escape the lonely house in the woods game). It is also a very creepy horror game, which I was not entirely prepared for. It’s the first in a three part series by a guy called Ben Leffler. Exmortis was his first ever flash game, and I don’t know if he made more games beyond the Exmortis series, but he’d probably make a decent shake at a horror game today, if Exmortis is anything to go by....

The Hitman 3 Starter Pack is available now free from the Epic Games Store. This means different things to different people. If you don’t have any of the ‘World Of Assassination’ trilogy, hey, it’s basically a demo. While the Starter Pack is sticking around, it’ll only offer access to Dubai until Monday the 5th of April. I first mentioned Mojo Swoptops in 2021 following their recreation of a long-demolished block of Edinburgh flats. You may know Haunted PS1 from their demo disc releases that have bundled together tons of demos for neat indie horror games. As for what’s coming this year, OKSoft creators of Coffin Mall (on Steam) say they’ll have a trailer in this year’s showcse for their atmospheric horror game about a mall cop being haunted by a murderous car....

While Inscryption is fab as a whole package, that first section is addictive. In his Inscryption review, Brendy calls it “a superbly designed card game” and a “beautifully cursed creation”.
