MobyGames is fantastic. It’s a vast database filled by volunteers with information on almost 300,000 games from over 300 platforms spanning decades. It has room for screenshots, artwork, credits, box art, marketing materials, editions, international releases, critic reviews, player reviews, trivia, and more. Like IMDB, but video games. It’s hugely impressive and hugely useful. I turn to MobyGames when a press release claims someone working on a new game was the “creator” of a much-beloved classic, and looking in the credits usually turns up that they were, like, a junior programmer....

However, Heroes Of The Aegean will be free to keep for the first two weeks after Old World releases. The DLC introduces some of Greece’s greatest historical leaders such as King Leonidas of 300 sweaty-men renown and Alexander the Great of ridiculously coiffured Colin Farrell infamy. There’s quite a few intriguing scenarios from 200 years of Hellenic history included, from the Battle of Thermopylae to conquering Greece as Macedonia with Philip II, so not too shabby for a freebie....

I’m impressed that Stacinator committed to crafting the whole 4-minutes-and-21-seconds-long radio edit of Africa rather than just a short snippet. The project required 17,000 note blocks and 19,000 block commands to pull the whole performance off. Stacinator explained that they used “every single fricking note block sound in the game” to achieve the remarkably convincing cover. “This project for me was a culmination of a bunch of different ideas that I at one point thought were all beyond my capabilities,” Stacinator commented on their Reddit post, “so I’m really proud of what I’ve learned....

In some ways, it’s not surprising that Bravely Default is such a good study of that classic Final Fantasy vibe. After all, it was originally conceived as a sequel to the also-excellent Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes Of Light spin-off for the Nintendo DS (which really took the series back to its roots when it came out in 2009 / 2010), and the latter’s producer, Tomoya Asano, also came over to produce the first Bravely Default game....

Now, many moons ago, I used to be big into Activision’s Battlezone and Pandemic Studios’s excellent follow-up Battlezone 2: Combat Commander. Outpost looks like it has a similar combo of combat and base-building, so that’s piqued my interest. You’ll need to shoot things, obvs, but then you can collect resources scattered around the map to invest in building structures and characters back at your home base. I’d like you to enjoy these videos in particular, where two players park their helicopters on top of each other while another downs an entire squad with their quad bike. You’ll catch some players complaining about how easy it is to kill people with vehicles, but those players are easy to ignore.
