Sure, being spotted by someone and discovering that your only defence is a squeaky toy you’ve stuffed into your seemingly very large pockets isn’t ideal, but the story of how you pulled back that nailed-on failure of a mission is going to be worth it in the end. 2016’s Hitman, which created more of a buzz than the sequel — the reboot came after the polarising, more linear Hitman: Absolution, so it’s understandable why it made a bigger splash — introduced a whole new audience to the wonders of trying to squeak out assassination wins after wild mess-ups....

Do I really need to explain the premise? You dig out your premises from a map full of solid blocks, Dungeon Keeper style, and then place tanks, before putting fish in them. There are many fish in Megaquarium, all real and well-researched, and they all have their own requirements for water conditions, tank scenery and so on. As punters come in to gawp at your Watery Walters, you gain both moneys (for the buying of more facilities, livestock and staff), and “prestige” points, which rack up to unlock new kinds of fish, tanks, equipment and facilities....

When you’re entering a loud heist, the rules of engagement are very different. You charge in with the heaviest armour and biggest weapons, blasting down civilians in a mad dash to the loot. Casualties are crucial here because you don’t have time to tie hands and take prisoners. It’s kill or be captured, so the best tactic is to shoot your way through and hope that you can delay the cops by preventing alarms and phone calls....

This is the start of the game: the rest entirely comprises shooting ptarmigans from a machine gun turret, in VR, before they overwhelm you. The birds poo constantly, obscuring Wayne’s vision unless he stops to wipe his visor, but he has to choose his moments carefully: if he stops the hurricane of lead for more than a few seconds, the line will be overrun by thousands of shrieking, shitting wildfowl....

Three Fourths Home explores the guilt and paranoia associated with going home for the holidays, as uni drop-out Kelly drives through a thunderstorm to see her family back in Nebraska. It’s a very simple game really, you just hold a single button to make the car drive. As long as the car is moving, dialogue options pop-up on the screen, as Kelly calls various friends and family to pass the time while storm sirens blare in the background....

Hoplite’s genius is that its rules are so incredibly easy to understand. Your Hoplite can kill any enemy by moving from one enemy-adjacent tile to the other (a stab), or by directly approaching the enemy and closing the distance between you (a lunge). You also have three abilities, each of which you can use instead of moving: a shield bash which knocks an enemy away one tile; a leap, which uses up energy in order to close larger gaps in a single move; and a spear throw, which gives you a ranged attack but forces you to retrieve your spear afterwards before you can lunge attack again....

The trailer gives me GTA-meets-Minecraft vibes, but with a very healthy dose of ruthless destruction thrown in there. It looks: great. In Teardown you can mess around in sandbox and creative modes, wrecking buildings to your heart’s content. Or you can play the campaign, do some heists, and bring some reason to your ravaging. The heists task you with preparing an escape route by destroying whichever bits of the map you deem best....

As it happens, I was playing it on the cusp of its own victory. The multiplayer shooter has just been released from early access, with version 1.0 pushing onwards to the Eastern Front. The maps are huge in Hell Let Loose, accommodating 50 vs. 50 fights, so dropping in two new ones, Stalingrad and Kursk, is no mean feat. I’ve been waiting for a large city map, and look forward to suffering in Stalingrad’s bomb-wrecked ruins....

You are a faction out to dominate in classical style, by defeating enemy armies and conquering their home city before they do the same to you as counter-conquest. You roam a world map as one or multiple Hero units, with an entourage of troops following behind as tiny sprites. There are mines, lumber mills and alchemy labs to capture, which will generate resources like ore, sulphur, gold, wood. All of which then auto-funnel to your hometown via little wagons....

At least we can get a better idea of what it’s all about today, as the trailer shows this band of unlikely squaddies jumping into a match battle royale style, before fighting off enemies to complete objectives. We also know it’s aiming for a summer release date. Rogue Company is a band of vigilantes who take on evil baddies in exchange for a big old payout from the government. They sound a bit like Overwatch, if Overwatch were mercenaries....

Of course, you need a contingency plan in case you don’t draw the perfect curve, so our Highlander Hunter deck is designed to play like a traditional Midrange Hunter most of the time. You’ve got a bit of Secret synergy, a dose of Beastly action, and a bunch of big cards to finish off your enemy. It’s turned out that Highlander Hunter is still viable in Darkmoon Faire, thanks in no small part to the sweet Secret package included in this expansion, as well as the extremely streamlined version of the deck that’s come to the fore recently....

So it’s a promising sign that, at the end of Best Way’s demonstration of the just-announced Men Of War II, I came away keen to play it. Not only does it look slicker and more user friendly than earlier games (without compromising on the depth that appeals to the series’ core fanbase) there are a couple of ideas it’s playing with that lodged themselves in my mind like chunks of grenade shrapnel....
